Household Uses for Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a naturally occurring mineral powder made from fossilized freshwater diatoms. Known for its fine texture and absorbent properties, Diatomaceous Earth is a versatile addition to many household routines.

For home use, always select the appropriate grade:

  • Food-grade DE for areas around pets, food storage, or potential contact with people

  • Insect-control grade (non-pool grade) for structural pest control

  • Never use pool-grade DE inside the home

Natural Home Applications

๐Ÿก Pantry & Food Storage Areas

Lightly apply food-grade DE in cracks, crevices, and along shelving edges to help maintain dry conditions in pantry spaces. Avoid direct contact with open food.

๐Ÿœ Household Pest Management

Diatomaceous Earth is commonly used as a mechanical (non-chemical) option in integrated pest management routines.

Apply a thin layer:

  • Along baseboards

  • Under appliances

  • Around entry points

  • In cracks and crevices

  • Around windows and door thresholds

It works best in dry areas. Reapply as needed after cleaning or moisture exposure. Check out our Crawling Insect Control Bag.

๐Ÿ› Bedding & Soft Furnishings

Lightly dust mattresses, pet bedding, carpets, or upholstered furniture as part of a cleaning routine. Allow to sit, then vacuum thoroughly.

Avoid creating airborne dust.

๐Ÿ—‘ Odor Control

Due to its absorbent properties, Diatomaceous Earth may be used in:

  • Trash cans

  • Diaper pails

  • Shoe racks

  • Litter box areas

  • Compost bins

Sprinkle a small amount to help absorb excess moisture that contributes to odor.

๐ŸŒฟ Garden & Outdoor Areas

Use around foundations, patios, sheds, and garden beds to help maintain dry conditions around the home perimeter. Apply only during dry weather for best results.

๐Ÿงผ Natural Cleaning Booster

Add a small amount to scrubbing mixtures for sinks, tubs, and stovetops to assist with gentle abrasion. Always test on a small surface area first.
