Farm & Ranch Wellness Uses for Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a naturally occurring mineral powder made from fossilized freshwater diatoms. Known for its absorbent properties and fine texture, Diatomaceous Earth is widely used in farm and ranch settings as part of routine animal care, feed management, and facility maintenance programs.

For agricultural use, always select the appropriate grade. Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is used for feed supplementation and areas where animals may ingest it. Never use pool-grade DE in animal environments.

Livestock Feed Management

Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is commonly incorporated into livestock feed as a flow agent and moisture control support.

Common Applications:

  • Mixed into cattle, horse, goat, sheep, swine, and poultry feed

  • Helps reduce clumping in stored grain

  • Supports dry feed storage conditions

  • May be included at up to 2% of total feed weight (follow label guidance)

Always mix thoroughly and ensure animals have access to clean, fresh water.

Barn & Stall Maintenance

Maintaining dry housing areas is essential for livestock wellness. Diatomaceous Earth may be used to:

  • Dust barn floors before bedding

  • Apply under stall mats

  • Mix into bedding material

  • Support dry conditions in loafing sheds

  • Help reduce moisture buildup in high-traffic areas

Apply a thin layer and avoid creating excessive airborne dust.

Poultry Houses & Coops

  • Sprinkle beneath bedding

  • Add to nesting boxes

  • Incorporate into dust bath areas

  • Use in feed storage bins to maintain dryness

Dry, well-ventilated housing remains critical for flock health.

Manure & Waste Areas

Diatomaceous Earth may be applied around manure storage zones or compost piles to help absorb excess moisture and maintain a more manageable environment.

Perimeter & Structural Use

Around barns, feed rooms, tack rooms, and storage buildings, Diatomaceous Earth is sometimes applied:

  • Along foundation lines

  • In cracks and crevices

  • Around feed storage areas

  • In dry perimeter zones

Best applied in dry weather conditions.

General Application Guidelines

  • Use food-grade DE in any area accessible to animals

  • Apply lightly — more is not more effective

  • Keep product dry for optimal performance

  • Wear protective equipment to avoid inhaling fine dust

  • Store in a sealed container in a dry location

Part of a Complete Ranch Management Plan

Diatomaceous Earth works best when integrated into a broader farm wellness program that includes:

  • Proper ventilation

  • Routine cleaning schedules

  • Balanced nutrition

  • Regular veterinary oversight

  • Responsible pasture management
