Diatomaceous earth is a chalk-like substance that is commonly used as an insecticide, deodorizer, filter cleaner and health supplement. The main component of diatomaceous earth is silicon dioxide. This naturally occurring substance is mined from old lake beds. It's composed of diatoms that have fossilized over millennia in old fresh water lake zones. As time has passed, these fossilized diatoms have accumulated together and formed huge silica deposits. When mined and ground into powder it becomes diatomaceous earth.

While it's more common to use Diatomaceous Earth as a flea prevention, many people have added small amounts of DE to their pet's diet.
